Monte-Carlo simulations of polymer crystallization in dilute solution

چکیده
Polymer crystallization in dilute solution is studied by three-dimensional Monte-Carlo simulations using the bond fluctuation model. We study monodisperse chains of moderate length, intended to model recent experiments on monodisperse alkanes with length of a few hundred carbon atoms, and we also investigate chain folding of very long polymers. For monodisperse flexible chains we observe both extended-chain and once-folded-chain crystals. The simulations illustrate the range of defects and irregularities which we expect to find in polymer crystals. The roughness of the top and bottom surfaces of the lamellae is measured. Chain ends can be seen as cilia emerging from the surfaces. Folds are found to occur with approximately equal frequency on top and bottom surfaces. Although most chain folds are aligned perpendicular to the growth direction, a significant number of chains folding parallel to the growth direction are found as defects. The simulation includes a chain stiffness parameter which has an important effect on chain folding kinetics. When chains are semi-flexible the crystals formed are extremely irregular with many defects including holes and blocks of extended chains within the folded chain lamellae. For very long chains we show that the lamellar thickness is determined by the folding kinetics. The thickness diverges as the temperature approaches the infinite chain melting point T` . For T→T` , the thickness is close to the theoretical minimum thickness, which indicates the dominant importance of the entropic barrier in crystallization. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!52510-X#

Interplay of polymer crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing in solutions studied by lattice-model theory and simulations
We report dynamic Monte Carlo simulations and statistical thermodynamic theories of a lattice-polymer model, in which polymer crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing of semiflexible homopolymer solutions were investigated simultaneously. In our simulations, the equilibrium phase transition temperature was approached by the onset of phase transitions on cooling, when an introduced substrate g...
متن کاملInfluence of solvent quality on polymer solutions: a Monte Carlo study of bulk and interfacial properties.
The effect of solvent quality on dilute and semidilute regimes of polymers in solution is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The equation of state, adsorption near a hard wall, wall-polymer surface tension, and effective depletion potential are all calculated as a function of concentration and solvent quality. We find important differences between polymers in good and theta solvents. ...

متن کاملPolymer depletion interaction between two parallel repulsive walls.
The depletion interaction between two parallel repulsive walls confining a dilute solution of long and flexible polymer chains is studied by field-theoretic methods. Special attention is paid to self-avoidance between chain monomers relevant for polymers in a good solvent. Our direct approach avoids the mapping of the actual polymer chains on effective hard or soft spheres. We compare our resul...

– A relationship between the measurable monomer-monomer structure factor, and the centre-of-mass (CM) structure factor of dilute or semi-dilute polymer solutions is derived from Ornstein-Zernike relations within the “polymer reference interaction site model” (PRISM) formalism, by considering the CM of each polymer as an auxiliary site and neglecting direct correlations between the latter and th...
